History

Boccia alla lunga is a sporting activity consisting of throwing a ball as far as possible. It is practised in stadiums, on roads and on grass. We are all capable of doing it, just as we are all capable of kicking a ball, but for the game of football, as for long ball and for any sport, specific skills are required to achieve a successful result, while respecting the rules that distinguish it.

It is a popular sport played by girls and boys, women and men from about the age of eight. At the amateur level there is no age distinction, while at the competitive level the categories of players are divided into under-18 and adult as well as men and women. The exclusive prerogative of this sporting activity is immersion in the natural environment surrounding the competition venue. Players witness and enjoy the colours and scents that characterise the area in all seasons of the year. This sport complements a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits. Competitive activity requires a state of psycho-physical well-being. Amateur activity is also recognised as having therapeutic and educational effects.

Its origin dates back to man. According to scholarly research, it was man's first sporting activity. Traces of this sport have been found in Egypt at the time of the pharaohs, and in Italy in the Middle Ages, when it was practised by the nobility.
Today, it is practised on all continents, but each country has its own characteristics, and in Italy there are even differences from region to region.

In 1969, the I.B.A. (International Bowlplaying Association) was founded in Europe. (lnternational Bowlplayng Association), with the aim of promoting the knowledge and the practice of the activity of longbowling in the three main disciplines on the road, on grass and on stadium. The I.B.A. is made up of the following associations: ABIS representing Italy, NKB representing the Netherlands, VSHB representing Germany, FKV representing Germany and BC representing Ireland.

Every four years, the European Championship is held, which is the world's largest representation of the sport of long bowls ("the Olympics of long bowls").
